Welcome everyone to my fourth and final review from the Jakks Pacific Incredibles 2 "Junior Supers" collection. This time around I'm taking a look at the biggest playset in the series—the Hyrdroliner! I saved this one for last, not only because of its massive scale, but also because I wanted to know more about this scene in the film since there are a lot of story points (or lack thereof) incorporated into the features here. I didn't want to guess on how this all ties into the film, but now having seen the movie last night, I'm ready to dive in. With that said, I can't talk about some of these features without discussing some of the story, so I would wait until you've seen the film before reading on. SOME BIG SPOILERS AHEAD. Ready? It's showtime.
The Hydroliner yacht is the location for the film's epic conclusion (which is why it's not really seen at all in any of the trailers or marketing). Honestly though, besides the fact that this is a cool looking boat with the Incredibles logo on it, it actually has little to do with what happens in the movie (and doesn't look too much like the yacht's design from the film either). For example, this toy has the Incredibles "i" icon all over the place (which made believe it belonged to the Parrs in someway before I saw the movie), but that is not present in the film and is certainty not the case. The ship's registration code on the side of this toy, CA 1132 IN (that famous Pixar A113 Easter Egg), is also not present there in the film (however A113 does appear, just not on the boat). A water escape craft is also included here, as well as a firing canon, life preserver, a trap door and a giant stretching arm—NONE OF WHICH are actually in the film.
Now of course that doesn't detract from the fact this is still a fun toy. It's huge with a lot of space to play. Even though the action features don't really connect to the movie, they're still fun and add a lot of play value for the kids. And it does look really neat, regardless.
And I'm assuming the figure's blue semi-translucence legs are suppose to represent when Elastigirl is being held hostage in the room with below freezing temperatures? That's what I think the makers were going for. More on that below.
Here's the bottom of the craft where you can see the rolling wheels attached the the boat's "Hydrofoil". I'm glad a rolling feature was included! The wheels aren't rubber, but they're on the softer side (to reduce any scuff marks) and have a decent grip to them. Everything about this toy feels very sturdy and well made.
Note: Though this is a "boat", this toy does not float and is not designed for use in real water—just pretend!
And here we have the spacious top deck with rotating/firing missile launcher.
The big round door on the side of the yacht can open up to reveal a Jet Ski style watercraft for quick escapes! Holds one figure.
This feature was a little bit of a let down since the packaging makes it seems like the craft actually launches from the yacht (I mean, I don't think I'm misinterpreting it— the feature is called "Watercraft Launcher"). The only way it "launches", is if you manually open the doors and roll it out. It would have been much cooler it this was a spring loaded feature where it could be launched out with the touch of a button.
Moving onto the back (rudder can move back and forth; life preserver can be stored atop—just press it into the pegs) and the reverse side of the boat...
I really like how the other side's panels lift up so that you can have access to all that play space within the middle and lower decks! In the pics below, you can better see how the watercraft is stored on its tracks when not in use. And notice the inside walls/panels have some molded detailing as well (you can spot a fire extinguisher, clock, hose, etc.). Nice touch. And this might be obvious, but I found that these areas also make for great storage to store your Junior Supers figures.
This also gives you easier access to the ship's main control bridge with a rotating steering wheel.
This giant extending arm feature (which I guess is somehow suppose to represent Elastigirl) was a strange choice. It's not like Mrs. Incredible becomes giant at any point (now I can't say the same thing for Jack-Jack ;) and an arm like that is definitely not a part of the actual boat in the film. Very odd! Either way, the point of it is, you can manually move the arm around and extend it to snatch up the bad guys (or save the good guys).
And right below the arm is a trap door! No playset like this is complete without some kind of trap door. Classic.
Here's another intriguing feature. On the package, this is called a "rotating cooling chamber." My guess is that this is suppose to be somewhat like the aforementioned freezing room where Evelyn Deavor holds Elastigirl hostage and hypnotizes her? If it is, I don't believe that room was on the yacht, but I've only seen the movie once so correct me if I'm wrong.
Below you can see that I added Elastigirl to the chamber. The front molded plastic piece is meant to resemble the Screen Slaver goggles.
Here's one of my favorite features (and this one, for the most part, actually makes sense in the context of that final big scene). Open the doors on the front of the boat and you can fold out an ice slide made by Frozone to help stop the boat from crashing into land! Pretty cool stuff. Love the blue ice looking translucent plastic used here.
To see all these features in action, check out this brief YouTube video (official Jakks Pacific commercial).
Here's a closeup of that "A113" Easter Egg, which again, never actually appears on the boat in the film (from what I could tell—I was specifically looking out for it, but I may have missed it). This boat is actually called the "S.S. Everjust" and is owned by the Deavors.
And lastly, this thing measures about 17" L x 12" H x 5.5" W and retails for $39.99. If you'd like to purchase the Hydroliner for your collection of Junior Supers (which I totally recommend, being a playset fan and all), it can be found at Target (in the Imaginext isle), ShopDisney.com, Toys R Us (if you still have one open near you; I know these can still be found at my local Toys R Us for the time being) or on Amazon using the direct link below!
If you have a little Incredibles fan at your home, you won't wanna miss out on this or really anything from this fun, amazingly stylized and adorable line of toys! I really hope it continues in the near future with even more Junior Supers figures, vehicles and playsets. Another HUGE thanks to Jakks Pacific for sending this over.
