Birth.Movies.Death. Magazine: Pixar Commemorative Issue

pixar birth movies death magazine

I'll be honest, until recently, I had never heard of Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas before. Being a big film fan myself, I'm actually really surprised! In short, for those who also may be in the dark, they're ultimately a movie theater chain for the serious movie-goer.

Known for their highest of quality visuals and sounds, their full menu of meals, snacks and drinks (to enjoy during the film) and they're strict no talking, no cell phone and no ads policy, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas creates a movie going experience like no other (from what I can tell of course, since I've never been to one). They've been dubbed "the #1 theater in the world" by Entertainment Weekly, which is no small feat. To learn more about them, as well as where they're located, visit the official site HERE.

What's really cool is that they've also have created their own exclusive film magazine entitled Birth.Movies.Death, which is available at each Drafthouse theater location as well as on MondoTees.com. Each issue is themed, much of the time correlating with whatever popular film is hitting theaters. With the release of Finding Dory this past month, Birth.Movies.Death has given us their very first [65 page] Pixar commemorative issue entirely dedicated to the animation studio!

When this issue was first announced, I was immediately attracted to the stunning cover art. I recognized the style of the work to be by none other than artist Dave Perillo, who I've been a fan of for a while now. Dave and I have met at numerous conventions and have developed a friendship through our passion for Disney, Pixar and art in general. He is one fantastic guy; if you ever have a chance to say a quick hi to him and/or support his art, do it. Congrats to him on this amazing piece of work!

To be real, the cover art is why I initially bought this issue. It's one of the most outstanding pieces of minimal Pixar art I've ever seen; and with all 17 Pixar films represented, it's also the most up to date. Man do I wish this was available as a print! I would buy it, frame it and hang it in a heartbeat. Here's to hoping.

However, once I actually got my copy in the mail, I realized how amazing the content was as well. It really took me by surprise! The articles presented here are some of the coolest, most down to earth writings on Pixar that I've ever read (and I haven't even read it through cover to cover yet- still working on that). If anyone now ever asks me why I love Pixar or why I think that they're a cut above other animation studios, I'll just hand them this and have them read the opening "Letter from the Editor" by Devin Faraci. That, along with everything else I've read so far, reflects my feelings and thoughts almost perfectly.

If you're a Pixar fan, then this is an absolute must have. You'll find so much inside that you'll love. I don't want to give too much away, but I did want to give you a sneak preview nonetheless. Along with with all the great articles seen below (yes, even a fun defense of Cars 2), you'll also find unique Pixar art, screen caps and other photos scattered throughout.

To learn a bit more on the creation of this Birth.Movies.Death Disney·Pixar issue, you can visit the Oh My Disney blog HERE. Or even better yet, order your copy of this today so you can check it out in its entirety! I was lucky enough to snag this while it was still in stock at Mondo Tees, but it unfortunately sold out there fairly quick. If I've piqued your interest in this though, there are plenty of copies available currently on eBay HERE. Get it while you can!

Note- there is also a Pixar Birth.Movies.Death "companion sketch book" featuring [mostly] the same cover design as this issue. That one is still available HERE for just $6.

And as far as the art of Dave Perillo is concerned, you can check out his portfolio on his blog Montygog (as well as all the upcoming shows he'll be attending). If you like what you see, be sure to hit him up on Instagram as well.
