Back in the spring of 2017 (right before Cars 3 products hit), Mattel released five 1:55 scale diecast "Deluxe" size semi truck characters from the original Cars—all Toys R Us exclusives under the "Radiator Springs Classic" banner: Gil, Chet Boxkaar, Jerry Recycled Batteries, Ben Crankleshaft and, tonight's blog post, Paul Valdez! This week I'll be taking a long overdue closer look at each one of them.
As shown in the screen shot above, Paul can be seen very briefly watching the Los Angeles tie-breaker race on TV at a gas station near the end of the film (alongside Gil and some other semis). What's fantastic about this release is that he actually comes with a tiny oil can molded to him (and a sipping expression) to recreate the exact movie moment! This was such a fun little detail I hadn't noticed until writing up this review. Nice one Mattel.
Paul was also released as a full hauler over a decade ago (2009 or 2010 I believe), but I missed out on that one when it was originally available and now prices for it have skyrocketed.
