Behold, your destiny awaits! Back in 2016, Mattel introduced us to their Toy Story "Minis" blind bag collection; a collection of mini figures so cute and so popular that the line is still continuing on today with many new characters being released throughout 2020. What's incredibly exciting is that the "Minis" are now also expanding beyond the Toy Story franchise for the first time with new Onward characters! I'm thrilled to finally have the time to share the complete set here in honor of the film hitting Disney+ this weekend.
Below I'll be giving you an up close and personal look at all the blind bag characters ($3.49 each), as well as two vehicle sets ($6.99 each). These can be found at Target stores across the US. Enjoy! Note: You can check out their cool in-store cardboard case in THIS blog post.
BLIND BAGS
Real quick, I have to mention how glorious the Guinevere van inspired bag design is here. The stylized designs of Ian and Barley are perfection and I appreciate all the details on the front and back. I would love to know who the designer is for the artwork, since I assume whoever it is did the brilliant designs for all the minis themselves as well.
What's amazing about any of the blind bags that Mattel puts out, is that you don't have to guess which character is inside if you know what to look for! There's a code (a series of numbers/letters) on the back of each bag near the top. The last letter in the run is what you're looking for as it will correspond to a particular character. For example, the bag I have down below (I circled the letter you want to pay attention to) is bag H. That means, yup, Office Specter is inside. It's that simple!
In this collection, there are 12 characters—so the letters range from A-L. Below is a detailed shot of each character and their corresponding letter! Hope it helps you out on your quest to collect them all.
I love the selection of characters that Mattel came up with. It's the perfect mix of main, secondary and obscure characters from the film. My favorites are probably the ones you look at and say "Huh? Where was he in the movie?"...like Adolphus the goblin (the sever at the Manticore's tavern who's late) and the gas station store clerk troll. I know we won't probably get a series 2, but I would love more of these types of characters to help flesh out the mini Onward world.
Each figure stands at about 1.5" tall.
BARLEY—A
IAN—B
WILDEN LIGHTFOOT (DAD)—C
THE MANTICORE— D
OFFICER COLT BRONCO—E
BLAZEY—F
GAS STATION STORE CLERK—G
OFFICER SPECTER—H
DEWDROP—I
LAUREL LIGHTFOOT (MOM)—J
TRASH UNICORN—K
ADOLPHUS—L
VEHICLE SETS
IAN LIGHTFOOT (WILLOWDALE COLLEGE SWEATSHIRT) & GUINEVERE
The van was essential! I'm so glad it was made here as a mini. The quest could not commence without it, right? The director has even said that they approached Guinevere as a main character in the film, not a prop. I also appreciate that an exclusive Ian was included in this set, and not just a repack of the standard version. And to my surprise, the van opens up! I honestly didn't even realize that until I took it out of the package this afternoon. On the top of the van, there's little spot where one of the minis can stand.
I also have to note how extra cute the cartoony/stylized unicorn is on the van. The design fits perfectly in line with all the other characters.
SPRITES & MOTORCYCLE
This is such a fun set! It's awesome to have a couple more of the main sprites in addition to Dewdrop. These two don't have names (at least here on the package), but they appear during the Pixie Dusters motorcycle chase scene. The bearded one is the one who leads the attack on Ian and Barley by jumping into Guinevere and the blue haired one is the one who fights Barley in the back seat of the van. This whole sequence is hilarious and one of my absolute favorites in the film.
There are four areas on the bike with foot holes to attach the pixie minis. Both vehicle sets make for fantastic accessories to bring even more fun to the mini figures! I would have loved some kind of playset as well.
Well everyone, that's all of them—man do I love this series! Be sure to let me know your thoughts below. Which figure is your favorite? If a series 2 was made by chance, which characters would you like to see? My list would include pawn shop owner Grecklin, Officer Gore, the Manticore mascot, Barley in his warrior costume, the gelatinous cube, a mermaid, a gnome, construction worker Fennwick (John Ratzenberger's character) and the group of students Ian invites to his birthday.
My sincerest gratitude for dropping in! Please contact me down in the comments if you have any questions. Now, until we cross paths once again, I bid thee farewell.
